Bailando Collage
Bailando con Mi Misma Collage began with a reinterpretation of the Watercolor Monotypes of the original series. When I create the monotypes, I create a gestural drawing on a sheet of Yupo as the top plate, and roll color on the 2nd plate.
In looking at the ghost images on the plates after creating prints,. the idea of recreating these works with more simple shapes occurred to me. I also became attracted to patterned fine art papers. So I began using the ghost image from the drawing plate as a template for the shapes I would need to create these new works.
As an added detail I incorporate hand stitching to these works. Not only do the papers transform visually into what appears to be fabric. The last touch is an embossed drawing of my face, and colored lips on both characters. It is to remind me that these are self portraits. Both characters are me.
The act of hand stitching connects me to my childhood, when my mother first taught me how to sew by hand, and later by machine. In selecting color palettes from these papers. It reminds me of being in my mother's sewing room where she had wall to wall fabrics. It is a powerful connection to her when I work.
This is a limited variable edition, similar to printmaking. I will make up to five of any given image, but no more. On each new piece I create, I change the colors of the clothing so that no two are exactly alike.
